Moby Dick de Herman Melville, Breve Reseña Necesaria

Melville (1819 - 1891) realiza un estudio pormenorizado acerca del tipo y clasificación de las diferentes ballena, desde el concepto bíblico del Leviatán, pasando por las investigaciones de los autores que hasta esa época habían investigado a los cetáceos.

El novelista describe ampliamente la actividad y toda la parafernalia utilizados para el oficio de la caza de ballenas, empleando su aceite, en su mayoría para alimentar las lamparas y otras luminarias de esa sociedad. 

Melville se muestra ecologista y conservacionista al preguntarse, ¿seguirá existiendo esta especie a lo largo de los años si se continúa su explotación indiscriminada?

En mi humilde opinión, creo que la obra en la actualidad no es adecuada para ser leída a niños, por la violencia y cruentas imagenes narradas que se detallan en el libro; a menos que se suprimieran estos pasajes al ser compartido con los infantes.

El capitán Ahab, un hombre que lucha contra una obsesión que le pulveriza el alma y su racionalidad.

Una obra recomendada para reflexionar sobre esta actividad, que puso en jaque y peligro real de extinción a las ballenas en el siglo 19.
